Neon Tommy: Are Asian American comedians doing AAPIs more harm than good?

Dat PhanRecently comedian Dat Phan appeared on CNN and defended the recent yellowface episode of How I Met Your Mother saying he didn’t see anything wrong with it, according to Mediaite.

Phan is one of the few Asian American comedians that has been able to gain mainstream media exposure, primarily because he was the first winner of the television comedy competition, Last Comic Standing.

Many more Asian American comedians have turned to You Tube to gain an audience.  Those such as KevJumba, Freddie Wong, Peter Chao and Mychonny.

The line between comedy, stereotypes and racism is often a narrow one. Many Asian American comedians use their ethnicity as the basis of much of their routines.

A blog by Ashley Yang for Neon Tommy wonders if these comedians are actually boxing themselves into a corner and hurting their communities rather than helping them.
