Sacramento Bee: Exhibit at the Newseum features Asian American media

Newseum ethnic media exhibitionDid you know the first Asian American newspaper was published during the Gold Rush to help Chinese immigrants seeking fortune in California?

A new exhibit titled “One Nation With News For All,” at the Newseum will feature this and other ethnic newspapers, radio, television and online publications that have helped millions of immigrants integrate into American culture while preserving their ties to their native lands.

The exhibit will feature Asian American publications such as the Chinese-language Golden Hills’ News, the first Asian American newspaper, launched in 1854 to help Chinese immigrants during the California gold rush and the Asian American news blog “Angry Asian Men”.

The exhibit will also highlight the work of Bill Hosokawa, a Japanese American journalist who wrote for The Heart Mountain Sentinel for two years while he was confined in a World War II internment camp.

“News For All” will open at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. on May 16, 2014 and run through Jan. 4, 2015.

RE: Exhibition at museum features Asian American ethnic media: Also the NY Historical Society is mounting an exhibit entitled, “Exclusion/Inclusion” about Chinese Americans set to start late Sept/early Oct 2014 til May 2015. They have already viewed some of my images of NYC Chinatown for inclusion.
