Las Vegas nightclub to take down offensive billboard

The Las Vegas nightclub, Tao, says it will take down a billboard that had been criticized for reducing Asian American women to prostitutes and sex objects.

Christine Lu, started the uproar with this tweet:

That tweet was picked up by several media outlets and generated a conversation about stereotypes objectifying Asian American woman.

Today she posted an email from Tao on her Facebook page which promised to take down the billboard.

Despite the promise, the letter was less than contrite.

We regret that you take such offense and see it as a perpetuation of an unfortunate stereotype that is cultivated FAR MORE heinously by the hundreds (if not thousands) of Asian massage parlors in L.A. and Las Vegas…not to mention the hundreds of billboards that scream out REAL happy endings. However, as a gesture of good faith we have decided to remove the billboard since it offends you so much. In the future, perhaps your focus would be better directed at the real source of the stereotype, actual happy ending massage parlors and their advertisements, not our harmless ad that elicits far more chuckles than letters such as yours.

The nightclub stated the billboard had been up for eight years and Christine was the first to take offense.

What’s your opinion? Is Tao being sincere with its actions?
