Double standard applied to Asian Americans

Colbert ReportThe backlash over the Stephen Colbert tweet and the subsequent pushback on the backlash reviews a double standard when it comes to Asian Americans.

Certain words in the English language are deemed totally unacceptable by most people.

The N word is the N word because using the whole word is deemed unacceptable by most sensible editors.

Even the use of the N word by the African American community itself has generated discussion about whether that’s even acceptable.

But when it comes to racist terms that apply to Asian Americans, those words are apparently acceptable–at least to the editors at Deadspin.

A Deadspin headline published Friday screamed Gooks don’t get Redskins joke.

Deadspin can scream all it wants about what it perceives to be oversensitive Asian Americans who can’t understand a joke and aren’t intelligent enough to distinguish satire from real racism.

There’s certainly room for debate there.

But when Deadspin takes it further by using a racist epithet to make its point, well I have to ask, what’s the point?

It’s not satire. It’s just racist.  It’s totally unacceptable and Deadspin owes the entire Asian American community an apology.
