Fresh Off The Boat: Season Finale Community Viewing in New York

Is the ABC-TV show Fresh Off The Boat returning for another season? That seems to be the popular question lately.

To help continue the buzz, a community viewing of the season finale titled So Chineez was held last night in New York. The picture is of party host Jeff Yang, father of Hudson Yang who plays a young Eddy, with t-shirt winners from last night’s party. The jumbo screen in The Circle, a club where the event was held, showed the Twitter handle of @ABCNetwork with the hashtag #RenewFOTB so that fans could press the network to give the show a second season.

Someone from the audience asked, “How can we make another season happen?”

“Tweet ABC as soon as this episode is over’ said Yang. “Tell them to renew Fresh Off The Boat. The conversation has been more about where and how, not whether (it returns).”

He explained that network executives are still deciding if it will remain in the same time slot at Tuesdays at 8pm which is up against NCIS and The Voice. They are also looking into Wednesdays at 8:30pm.

If it remains in the current time-slot, Yang is hoping another show will be added onto Tuesdays so it’s not on its own. “Or are they going to put it somewhere where it will grow and thrive?”

What was not brought up, was Eddie Huang’s controversial comments he made on Twitter earlier this month on why he no longer recognizes or watches the show. The show is based on his memoir by the same title, Fresh Off The Boat.

“I had to say something because I stood by the pilot. After that, it got so far from the truth that I don’t recognize my own life, “ tweeted Huang on April 8.

Jackie Huie, a fan of the show said, “I like all the episodes, but my favorite one was about the superstitions. It was so real about the Chinese people and the number four. “

That episode on the superstition of the number four showed Eddie’s mother Jessica, played by Constance Wu, avoiding the number four in her daily life. The number four is considered bad luck because is it also the Chinese homonym of the word death.

The show’s stars were in Los Angeles for a cast party, but had prerecorded an exclusive video answering questions submitted by fans earlier. One question asked if Constance Wu could speak Chinese in real life. Watch the video to learn if she does. The evening also included clips of the show’s bloopers and t-shirt give-aways.

Yang told the audience at the end, “You are the ones that made the show happen and carried it forward. This is our thing. More than anything else, what was amazing is that it is a show that all of us have been a part of. It is our experience, our Asian American world and thank you for being a part of it. We will see you next season.”
