Wushu or Chinese martial arts is fighting for Olympic glory with an eye on the 2024, reports the Bangkok Post.

Despite judo and taekwondo already being recognized by the Olympics, wushu was denied Olympic status for the 2020 games, but the growing popularity of the sport outside of China gives wushu enthusiasts hope.

At the World Wushu Championships, two athletes from Russia were among the medalists.

The competition featured 600 athletes from around the world.

“I think wushu is starting to have a worldwide presence,” said Mario Martinez, U.S. national Team coach. “I’m starting to see younger athletes coming in who have seen it in the movies.”

Hollywood blockbusters like Kung Fu Panda and The Last Airbender have increased the sports exposure. Stars like Jet Li remain prominent on the big screen.

Right now a lack of sponsorship is a handicap. You can read more about the emerging sport in the Bangkok Post.
