Diversity Study USC 2016
Comprehensive Annenberg Report on Diversity

A new study released by the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism found that just 28.3% of all speaking roles across 414 films, television and digital episodes in 2014 -2015 were from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.

“This is no mere diversity problem. This is an inclusion crisis,” said the study’s author Stacy Smith, Founding Director of the MDSC Initiative. “Over half of the content we examined features no Asian or Asian American characters, and over 20% featured no African American characters. It is clear that the ecosystem of entertainment is exclusionary.”

The study titled Comprehensive Annenberg Report on Diversity made similar findings about women, Blacks, Latinos, and LGBT. Television and cable have made greater progress than films, according to the study.

This comes out just a week before the Oscars which has been criticized for its lack of diversity in the nominations.
