SF Examiner: City Leaders Back Chinese Janitors “Unfairly” Fired

City leaders in San Francisco came out in support of mostly Chinese immigrant janitors recently fired by the University of California, San Francisco, reports the San Francisco Examiner .

The California Public Employment Relations Board recently ruled the hospital violated fair labor practices after they were not rehired after organizing against wage cuts from $14.75 to $10.74 in 2014.

“It got all the workers really mad,” worker Kin Kwong said. “That’s why we called out sick for two days and the [Chinese Progressive Association] asked to help.”

“These workers exercised their rights guaranteed by the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act,” said Board of Supervisors President London Breed. “They should not face retaliation for trying to improve their working conditions.”

The University says it has acted within the law and has denied all allegations.
