The first Vietnamese American ever elected to Congress has declared his candidacy for the U.S. Senate to represent Louisiana.
Joseph Cao hopes to succeed Sen. David Vitter who will retire at the end of his term.
Cao represented New Orleans in the House of Representatives from 2009 to 2011, becoming the first Republican to represent his district since 1891.
He will face a crowded Republican field which will include Representatives Charles Boustany and John Fleming as well as state treasurer John Kennedy.
