An Indian American mother and her African American grandmother-in-law found a racist sign in their front yard using a racial slur and telling them to leave their El Cerrito, California neighborhood, reports India West.
The two spotted the cardboard sign shortly after putting out two small fires set underneath their car.
“We thought we lived in a safe neighborhood. We didn’t know this kind of thing happened in our neighborhood,” said Emma Dawley, 89. “I found it a bit numbing.”
Police are hoping someone who has a surveillance camera in the neighborhood might have captured the hate crime in action.
El Cerrito is east of San Francisco.
