It’s been a busy and varied month for Asian American students at campuses across the country.

At the University of Washington in Seattle, the Asian Coalition for Equality (ACE) held its third annual Asians Collaborating Together (ACT) conference at the Ethnic Cultural Center on Saturday, reported the Daily UW.

State Senator Pramila Jayapal of Seattle is the only woman of color in the state Senate. She spoke about the importance of diversity and leadership.

“We are very multifaceted people,” she said. “There is no ‘one’ Asian American. If society is misrepresenting us, then we have to represent ourselves.”

At the University of California, Berkeley, the Daily Cal reported that Tani Cantil-Sakauye, California’s state Supreme Court Justice and a Filipina American, told students that diversity is a chief emphasis of hers on the high court.

“We have diversity on the bench in which the majority are people of color and are women … We end up being more reflective of community, so there is more public trust,” Cantil-Sakauye said. “When people come in to speak, they see people who look like them.”

At a recent panel held at Northwestern University, panelists tackled the topic of fetishism, according to the Daily Northwestern.

Asian American Studies Prof. Ji-Yeon Yuh said Asian American women are depicted as “exotically degraded human (beings)” as well as “submissive, docile, ‘Leave It to Beaver’ kind of (women).”

The word fetish she says implies a lack of respect for a person behind a racial or sexual identity.

Students of course are also finding time to let their hair down.

At both the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of Illinois, students celebrate Holi, the Indian festival of color, by splashing each other with biodegradable colors.
