The Foothill-DeAnza College Board near San Jose is expected to approve the appointment of Thuy Thi Nguyen as its new president today. (UPDATE May 4: Vote expected to be finalized Monday night, according to LaVozDeanza)

If approved, Nguyen would become the first Vietnamese American to be appointed president in California, according to the Mercury News.

She arrived in the United States as a Vietnamese refugee with her family and is currently the legal counsel for the Peralta Community College District, also in California.

“In light of where I was I feel very glad for all the opportunities,” Nguyen said. “I feel motivated to contribute back.”

Students at Cornell University are reaching out to underrepresented AAPI groups this Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

“With APAA’s #MoreThanJustYellow Campaign, we wish to highlight traditionally underrepresented Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the API community,” a statement read. “The silenced histories of these groups have lead to injustices such as the exclusion of brown folks, erasure of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders and anti-blackness. In line with last month’s community town hall, let’s critically examine who in the API community gets to be represented and who is left out. Let’s consider queer, black Asians, South Asians, Southeast Asians, Pacific Islanders, APIs with disabilities and low income APIs. Let’s remember that while Asians might be considered the model minority, there are still large problems in our society. Let’s remember that the API community is more than just yellow. By addressing their stories, we hope to reshape what is considered API at Cornell.”

The Asian American Studies Program at Cal State University Northridge marked its 25th anniversary April 23.

“Watching the Asian American studies department develop has been one of the great joys of being part of this college,” CSUN Dean of the College of Humanities Elizabeth Say said to CSUN Today. “They have tremendous faculty, amazing students, and their staff are outstanding. I’ve never known a group of faculty who are more committed to their students than the faculty of Asian American Studies — we have ones who are just as committed, but not more committed.”

Ki Hong LeeAt Northwestern University, actor Ki Hong Lee who has recurring roles in Netflix’ Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt and the movie franchise The Maze Runner spoke to students, reports North by Northwestern.

He talked about the whitewashing of Asian roles in Hollywood.

“The only way to change that is if you have writers, directors, producers, the whole gambit,” Lee said. “That’s gonna take time. It’s not gonna be overnight and it’s not gonna be next year or the year after. It’s gonna be a lot longer, but it starts with what people want.”
