Napa Valley Register: Proposed Park to Pay Homage to Napa’s forgotten Chinatown

The heart of California’s world famous wine region may soon have a park dedicated to Napa’s forgotten Chinatown.

The city hopes construction of the park named China Point Overlook will begin later this year.

The Napa Valley Register reports two bids on the park were recently rejected, but officials hope to reopen bids soon.

Plans for the park include a 14 x 14 foot moon gate done in traditional Chinese style.

China Point Overlook is located near Napa River and Napa Creek, the area that formed the once thriving Chinatown in the mid-1800s. The community of about 300 people lasted until 1902 when a fire ripped through the area, destroying most of Chinatown. Shwarz Hardware Co. then evicted most of the tenants that remained for a yacht dock which was never built.

China Point is one of three parks approved in Napa in 2007 and the only one that has yet to be constructed.
