Asahi Shimbun: Legion of Honor Awarded to Japanese American Soldier

Legion Of HonorThe highest decoration awarded by France has been given to a Japanese American solider for his role in liberating France during World War WII, reports Asahi Shimbun.

Edward Yamasaki received the French Legion of Honor this month. He served on the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and recalls carrying up to 20 bodies of fallen comrades each day.

He has spoken about his experience several times at the Pearl Harbor Museum in Honolulu.

He has also published a book of testimonies and photos of Japanese American soliders.

“Humans have the capacity to empathize,” Yamasaki said. “There would be less war if only people tried to learn from history and understand how those in other countries are feeling.”
