Pramila Jayapal Poised to become First Indian American Woman Elected to Congress

Pramila JayapalPramila Jayapal has won the District 7 Congressional primary in Washington state and could be the first Indian American woman ever elected to Congress.

She won with 39 percent of the vote. Brady Walinshaw narrowly is ahead in second place with 21.29% and Joe McDermott is right behind him with 20.87%. Write-in ballots which are still being counted will determine who runs against Jayapal in the general election.

“We’re building a movement that can clearly stake out a positive vision for the future of America at a time when too many people feel cynical about change, and when too many people are struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table,” Jayapal said.

She describes herself as progressive and was among the first congressional candidates endorsed by Bernie Sanders.

She is running to replace the retiring Jim McDermott. The immigrant rights advocate is currently serving her first term as a Washington State Senator.

Jayapal ran on a platform of pledging to fight for a higher minimum wage, debt free college, and expanded Medicare and social security.
