Scores of people are using the hashtag #IllWalkWithYou in sympathy for a New York City Muslim religious leader and his associate who were gunned down Saturday just blocks away from their mosque.
Imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, and his assistant Thara Uddin, 64, were shot in the back of the head in Ozone Park.
People in the Muslim community suspect both were victims of a hate crime. In response, many have taken up the hashtag to signify they will walk with Muslims to their Mosque so they can worship in peace and without fear.
To all my #Muslim friends:
I see you.
I love you. #IllWalkWithYou— Rabbi Latz (@RavMABAY) August 14, 2016
Whoever tweeted #illwalkwithyou just know you touched the heart of many Muslim Americans in a moment they needed it the most.

Because I know what it’s like when they come for me, and I won’t let them come for you. #IllWalkWithYou
