Elaine Quijano of CBS News has been named to moderate the Vice Presidential debate to be held October 4 in Farmville, VA.

She is the first anchor of a digital network and also the first Filipino and Asian American to moderate a national debate in a general election campaign, according to a list of debate moderators from the Commission on Presidential Debates.

Quijano is the weekday anchor of CBS’ digital network, CBSN, and is also the anchor of the Sunday CBS Weekend News. She has worked for CBS since 2010 covering such major stories as the Boston Marathon bombings, Superstorm Sandy, and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Prior to that, she covered the White House, the Supreme Court and the Pentagon for CNN. She covered the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama as White House correspondent for CNN beginning in 2006.

“It’s an honor to be chosen to help bring the issues of this critical election to the public,” said Quijano.

Named to moderate the Presidential debates are NBC News anchor Lester Holt, ABC’s Martha Raddatz, CNN’s Anderson cooper and Fox New’s Chris Wallace.

The choices received some criticism from the Hispanic community. No Hispanic has ever moderated a Presidential or Vice Presidential debate. Some have pushed for Univision’s Jorge Ramos.
