A new reality show featuring an Asian American casting director debuted Tuesday night on Myx TV, the only English language Asian American entertainment network.

Cast Me stars David Kang of DK Casting, which focuses on filling roles in television commercials, music videos and movies.

The show will give viewers a behind the scenes look at how roles are cast. Aspiring actors and actresses will compete for their big break. Kang will be joined by fellow judge and DK Casting co-owner Becky Wu, former Australia’s Biggest Loser host Ajay Rochester and former Latino child star and casting director Germán Legarreta.

“I believe anyone who puts in the hard work can truly make a difference in this industry. If people are upset that there aren’t enough Asian Americans on TV and in film,do what I did…and make your own shows cast with Asian American,” said Kang to AsAmNews.

Kang says DK Casting usually hires at least one Latino, one African American and one Asian unless the commercial is set in an area that has to have a certain ethnicity.

He’s worked in Hollywood for 17 years. and has seen major changes in Asian American representation during those years.

“However, I’m not sure that, enough will be done until Asians run Hollywood,” Kang said.

He sees Cast Me as advancing more Asian Americans in Hollywood.

“We have two Asians in the show that speak without a stereotypical accent
and are just able to be people and not fit a stereotypical role,” he said. “We get to showcase Asians working successfully in the entertainment industry, so I think when people watch the show and see this, I truly believe more Asians will want to be in the entertainment industry and more doors will open up to have more Asians on other shows.

“I hope that by creating this show and others like it that Asian Americans who want to work in entertainment will see that they can do it and be successful. As a casting director, I also try to help actors improve so they have a better chance of landing that dream role, regardless of their ethnicity.”
