A Filipino American man in Long Beach says he just can’t stay silent about the mental anguish his wife was going through after giving birth.

Ken Ventanilla opened up about his wife’s ordeal with post-partum depression to KABC.

Last month his wife Charlene stabbed the 8-week old newborn to death before killing herself.

Despite what happened, his love for her is still evident.

“She was the sweetest woman, the greatest wife I could ever ask for and the best mother,” Ventanilla said.

Ken says Charlene started acting different shortly after taking birth control pills after Shane’s birth. She suffered from paranoia and started talking about killing herself.

She had scheduled to see a doctor about her symptoms, but a day before the appointment, tragedy struck.

“That very last night, Charlene was reassuring me and her mother and everybody else that she was OK,” Ventanilla said. “I really don’t think that she could even grasp what was going on with her, or the type of control she didn’t have with herself.”

One in seven pregnant and new mothers will have perinatal mood or anxiety disorders.

Symptoms include a feeling of being overwhelmed to the point of feeling “I can’t do this,” a feeling of guilt for having those feelings, and a feeling of disconnection with the baby. For a full list of symptoms and treatments, go to http://postpartumprogress.org.
