Daily Princetonian: Asian American Co-Eds Share Stories of Racial Microaggression

The co-presidents of a Yale fraternity, SAE, recently signed off a letter with the words “eating Asian p**sy, all we need is sweet and sour sauce.”

The words, an apparent reference to a Kanye West song, angered members of the Asian American Student Association, according to the Daily Princetonian. Coincidentally a poster campaign, which began over the summer at Yale ,will highlight these types of incidents to build awareness around the stereotyping and sexual innuendo.

“I want to inundate the campus with the message that for so long, Asian women in general have been silenced by stereotypes, and that we are no longer silent, especially in our current political environment where so many negative things are spoken about women,” Alis Yoo, organizer of the Asian girls everywhere campaign said.

Yoo began collecting experiences of numerous Asian American co-eds and those experiences have inspired a series of posters.

16 posters quoting examples of sexual racialization  endured by students will be placed around campus to spark discussion around this issue.

Among the words quoted on the posters will be “you’re pretty for an Asian,” “you’re the whitest Asian ever” and “I’ve always wanted an Asian bride like you.”   Yoo acknowledged that last poster represented an incident she experienced while passing out information during a summer internship in New York.
“First off, I’m not Chinese, I’m Korean,” said Yoo. “But the worst of all was that I couldn’t even say anything at the moment because I needed that guy’s support and that I was supposed to act professionally,” she said.

The posters will be unveiled later this week.
