NAACP Speaks Out Against Spike in Hate Crimes Against Muslims & Blacks

SwastikaThe NAACP is condemning the recent spike in hate crimes against Muslims and Blacks following the election of Donald Trump.

In Minneola, east of New York City, racist sidewalk graffiti directed at Blacks and Muslims was found on the sidewalk.

The graffiti included swastikas and the statement “Make America White again.”

“The slogan “Make American White again” springs from a poisonous well, watered by the hateful rhetoric of the Trump campaign. The attempts to romanticize an era of our nation history highlighted by racial polarization, has instead, opened a floodgate of hate against America’s most vulnerable groups,” said Cornell William Brooks, President, and CEO of the NAACP.

That follows an incident in upstate New York in Wellsville. A baseball dugout was also vandalized with swastikas and the same White supremacist slogan which plays on the campaign slogan of President-elect Trump.

Earlier this week, the New York Police Department reported that in the one month period since the election of Trump, the city has seen a 115 percent increase in bias crimes.

“We started looking at certain parameters: what happened post-Election Day? We had a huge spike, right after Election Day, it’s somewhat slowed a little bit,” said Robert Boyce, chief of detectives of the New York City Police Department. “We’re seeing across the board an increase right now.”

“The NAACP has been fighting against race hatred for more than a century,” said Dr. Hazel Dukes, President of the NAACP New York State Conference, and member of the National Board of Directors. “We will not sit idly by while cowards attempt to return our society to a time when racist behavior and thought was the norm. I implore the people of the state of New York to stand with the NAACP in refusing to tolerate any such vile displays of hate in our communities.”
