Today’s Google Doodle celebrates the birthday of Chinese Australian Dr. Victor Chang, who many consider to be the pioneer of modern heart transplants in Australia.
Chang was born on November 21, 1936, in Shanghai, China, and died in Australia on July 4, 1991. Today would have been his 87th birthday.
According to The Independent, Chang was known for his contributions to cardiology. He developed an artificial heart valve and an artificial heart assist device that is still used today.
In 1984, he performed a successful heart transplant on 14-year-old Fiona Coote, Indy100 reports. She was the youngest-ever heart transplant patient in Australia at the time.
