The American Civil Liberties Union says applications for citizenship from legal US residents are being indefinitely delayed while federal immigration officials check for terrorist ties, reports the Wall Street Journal.
The ACLU criticized the program as overreaching and going beyond the rules set by Congress. Among those caught in what the ACLU considers an overly wide net are people who attend mosques under government surveillance.
But supporters of the program say they have no evidence the program is discriminatory and defend it as necessary in these times of growing national security concerns.
