Shanghaiist: Chinese contestant subjected to racist ridicule on stage

CATEGORIES

Holland's Got TalentAsAmNews tries to focus on things impacting Asian Americans, but sometimes you just can’t ignore what’s happening to Asians in other parts of the world.

A Chinese contestant on Holland’s Got Talent was subjected to numerous offensive references to his race by the judges both before and after he performed on the show.

It started off with a snide remark about his name, Xiao Wang. Then another judge picked up on that and compared his upcoming performance to an item on a Chinese menu. Then even after he clearly hit it out of the ball park with an outstanding operatic performance, the judges expressed amazement about how well he did, as if how could something so beautiful come out a nerdy Chinese guy.

But it only got worst. You can see the awkward reaction from the audience to the judge’s comments and the standing ovation the audience gave Wang along with the scolding one judge said to the other, in the video clip below.

Update: You Tube has taken the video down on copyright grounds. But you can hopefully still see it at this link.

  1. From Linnea Priest via e-mail: Please convey to the judges on Holland's Got Talent that their racist,
lame jokes are not appreciated. My children are ethnic Chinese and on
their behalf, I must protest. This is the 21st century. Stupid ethnic
    references are obsolete.
